Frequently asked questions
- How is a word defined?
- A word is a run of characters separated by whitespace, which is how word processors count and what most people expect. A hyphenated compound such as well-known counts as one word.
- Does it work with Vietnamese?
- Yes. Vietnamese separates words with spaces, so the counts are accurate, and accented characters are counted as single characters rather than as a letter plus a tone mark.
- Why does the character count differ from another tool?
- Many tools count UTF-16 code units, which makes an emoji count as two. This tool counts code points, so what you see matches what you would call a character.
- Is my text stored anywhere?
- No. The text stays in your browser tab, is never uploaded, and disappears when you close or reload the page.
