Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded?
No. Compression uses your browser canvas, so the image is never sent anywhere. That makes it safe for photographs you would not want on someone else's server.
Why does my PNG come back as WebP?
PNG is lossless, so a quality setting does nothing for it and re-encoding usually produces a larger file. WebP keeps transparency and is typically far smaller. Choose JPEG explicitly if you do not need transparency.
Why did my file get bigger?
Re-encoding an already well-compressed image at high quality can add bytes. Lower the quality, or keep the original if the result is larger.
Will compressing lose quality?
JPEG and WebP are lossy, so some data is discarded. At quality 75 and above the difference is usually invisible at normal viewing size.
