Frequently asked questions
- Which cut-offs should I use?
- The WHO Western Pacific cut-offs were recommended for Asian populations because the health risks BMI stands in for tend to appear at a lower index — overweight from 23 rather than 25. If you are of Asian descent, that is the more relevant set, and the difference is not cosmetic: a BMI of 24 is "normal" internationally and "overweight" under Asia-Pacific.
- How much does BMI actually tell me?
- Less than its popularity suggests. It is weight over height squared and knows nothing about muscle, bone, body shape or where fat sits — a muscular athlete and a sedentary person of the same weight and height get the same number. It is a screening figure for populations that got adopted for individuals. Use it as one input, not a verdict, and talk to a doctor about anything that matters.
- Does it work for children or during pregnancy?
- No. Children are assessed against age-and-sex percentile charts rather than fixed bands, because a growing body changes proportion constantly. Pregnancy changes weight for reasons BMI cannot interpret. This calculator uses adult cut-offs and should not be applied to either.
