How to use

  1. Pick the question you are answering: a percentage of a number, what percentage one number is of another, or the change between two numbers.
  2. Enter the two values. A comma or a full stop both work as the decimal separator.
  3. Select Calculate, or press Enter.
  4. Check the formula shown under the result to confirm the calculation is the one you meant.

Features

  • Three calculations covering almost every everyday percentage question.
  • The formula is shown with your numbers substituted in.
  • Handles decimals, negative values and comma decimal separators.
  • Percentage change uses the magnitude of the starting value, so negative-to-negative moves read correctly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between percentage change and percentage points?
Percentage change compares two numbers relative to the first one: 5% to 10% is a 100% increase. Percentage points measure the plain difference, which in that example is 5 points. This tool calculates percentage change.
How do I calculate a discount?
Use the first mode to find the discount amount, for example 20% of 150 is 30, then subtract it from the original price to get 120.
Why is the change from -50 to -25 shown as +50%?
The change is measured against the size of the starting value, so a move of 25 against a starting magnitude of 50 is 50%. It is positive because -25 is greater than -50.

Body mass index with the cut-offs that apply where you live — the international bands and the lower Asia-Pacific ones disagree, and the difference is a whole category.
