How to use

  1. Drop a logo — square, and at least 512px on a side if you have it.
  2. Download each icon, or the ones you need.
  3. Paste the HTML into your page's head.
  4. Add the manifest icons to your site.webmanifest if you have one.

Features

  • Six sizes: the two browsers request, the iOS home screen icon and the two a manifest needs.
  • Non-square images centre-cropped rather than squashed.
  • Warns when a size is larger than the image you gave it.
  • Link tags and manifest JSON generated to match the filenames.
  • Runs entirely in your browser — the image is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Why not the .ico file everyone talks about?
Because browsers stopped needing it. Every browser in current use reads PNG icons from the link tags, and modern practice is to serve those. An .ico is only needed for very old Internet Explorer, which will not be visiting.
Why is my wide logo cropped?
Because a favicon is square, and the alternative is squashing — which is what makes generated icons look subtly wrong. The largest centred square is used, so design a square version of the mark if the crop loses something important. At 16 pixels a wordmark is unreadable anyway; a single letter or symbol works better.
Which sizes do I actually need?
32 for the tab, 180 for iOS, and 192 and 512 if you have a web app manifest. 16 and 48 are cheap to include and cover older bookmark bars. Anything beyond that is a file nobody requests.
