How to use

  1. Paste the destination URL.
  2. Fill in source, medium and campaign — analytics needs all three.
  3. Add term or content if you are testing two links in the same campaign.
  4. Copy the tagged URL and use it in your campaign.

Features

  • Builds the five standard UTM parameters correctly encoded.
  • Preserves any query string and fragment already on the URL.
  • Replaces existing UTM tags instead of duplicating them.
  • Lowercases values by default, so one campaign does not split into several reports.

Frequently asked questions

Why lowercase the values?
Analytics tools treat utm_source=Newsletter and utm_source=newsletter as two different sources, which splits one campaign across several rows. Lowercasing everything avoids that.
What is the difference between source and medium?
Source is where the traffic comes from, such as newsletter or google. Medium is the type of channel, such as email or cpc. Source answers who sent them, medium answers how.
Should I tag internal links?
No. Tagging a link between pages of your own site restarts the session and destroys the original attribution. UTM parameters belong only on links coming in from elsewhere.
Will this work with tools other than Google Analytics?
Yes. UTM parameters are a de facto standard and are read by most analytics platforms.
